A high school in South Carolina was the scene of a violent fight that resulted in one teenage girl being stabbed by another, according to police. A 15-year-old female student was charged with the stabbing of a 17-year-old female student after police were called to the Richland County high school on Feb. 25 around noon.

When police arrived at the school courtyard, an adult was giving first aid to the 17-year-old student by applying pressure to her stab wound with a belt. Police searched the younger girl for a weapon, but she told them she had thrown her knife away earlier. She admitted that she regularly carries the knife to school. She also admitted that she did stab the older girl. Police later found the knife.

The 15-year-old student, who was not identified by police due to her age, was charged with attempted murder and was taken to the juvenile wing of a detention center. The 17-year-old student was taken to a hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. She was listed in critical condition the following afternoon.

Violent crimes are among the most serious offenses handled by the courts. When a minor is charged with such serious crimes, the situation may be different than it would be for an adult. But in any case that involves attempted homicide, the prosecution will go through a deep investigation before attempting to put forth punishment. This is why a person who has been accused of a violent crime may want to partner with an attorney. Every defendant has the right to a fair legal process, and a lawyer can look out for their best interests.

How do I know if I need a lawyer?

If you have been charged with a crime, arrested, or under investigation then you need a lawyer.

When you’re charged with a crime, there may be potential penalties that you’re not aware of. But there are ways to defend against the charges, too. Your lawyer can strategize for your case. They can represent you in court and to the prosecutor, putting their expertise to work for you.

What steps should I take immediately to protect my rights?

If you’re arrested or charged with a crime, be polite – but don’t consent to any search. Politely say that you refuse to answer any questions. Don’t resist the law enforcement officer.

Exercise your right to remain silent. This includes law enforcement officers before and after the arrest. It also means not talking to others at the police station, your friends, extended family, and social media. The things you say can be used against you.

Ask to contact your lawyer. Then call us right away. We can represent you at your next court hearing. Save everything that you think may be relevant to the case.

Will my case go to trial?

There may be non-trial options available to you. You may secure a plea bargain or a pre-trial case diversion. Sometimes, preliminary motions can result in charges being dismissed.

However, you always have the right to a trial. In a trial, the prosecutor must prove the charges against you beyond a reasonable doubt.

Most cases don’t end up going to trial. But what matters is your case. Attorney Yarborough will work with you on a personalized case plan that reflects your interests and goals.
